17th Dhaka International film Festival
DIFF 2019
From Fri, Jan 11, 2019 to Fri, Jan 18, 2019 ● La Galerie, Auditorium Nouvelle Vague and Multiple Venues

17th Dhaka International film Festival (DIFF) will be held in Dhaka from 10 to 18 January 2019. The general theme of the festival is 'Better film, Better Audience and Better Society.
 
Alliance Française de Dhaka will host the 'Fifth Dhaka International Conference on Women in Cinema 2019' on 11 and 12 January at La Galerie. Notable personalities such as Alin Tasciyan, Aparajita Ghosh, Drbebjani  Halder, Prof. Dr Gitiara Nasreen, Dr Maja Bogojevic and Sydney Levine will present keynotes on the conference.

Organized by Rainbow Film Society, DIFF will screen about 220 films from around 70 countries. The festival will also organize contests in categories i.e. Asian Cinema, Retrospective, Bangladesh Panorama, Cinema of the World, Children Films, Women Film makers, Short and Independent Films and Spiritual Films. French critics François d'Artemare, Pierre-Simon Gutman,and Nada Azhari Gillon will participate in the jury.

Day 1, Friday, 11 January 2019
Inaugural Programme: (9:30 am–11 am)
•    Cultural programme 30 min

Speakers:

  • Sydney Levine, director of the 5th Dhaka International Conference on Women in Cinema and trainer/ educator, writer and consultant for festival, USA.
  • Dr Sanzida Akhter, Chair and Associate Professor Department of Women and Gender Studies, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh
  • Md. Shahriar Alam, MP and State Minister of Foreign Affairs will preside over the segment.

Tea Break (11 am–11.30 am)

Day 1-Session 1: (11:30 am-1 pm)
“New generation of contemporary women directors and their place in the world cinema in the age of intensified manifestations for gender equality, and protests against structural male violence”

Alin Tasciyan, Deputy General Secretary of the FPRESCI and Film Critic from Turkey will present the keynote paper.

Discussants:

  • Pegah Arzi, filmmaker, Iran
  • N. Rashed Chowdhury, Independent Filmmaker and Film Activist, Bangladesh
  • Samia Zaman, filmmaker and media personality Bangladesh will preside the session.

Day 1-Session 2: (2 pm-3:30 pm)
"From Screen to Screen: Women’s Experience of Watching Cinema in Urban Bangladesh"
Dr Gitiara Nasreen, Professor Mass Communication & Journalism, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh will present the keynote paper.

Discussants:

  • Amita Shankar, UK-based artist and film programmer
  • Gulbara Tolomushova, author and film critics from Kyrgyzstan
  • Dr Zakir Hossain Raju, Professor and Head, Dept. of Media and Communication, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) will preside the session.

Day 1-Session 3: (4 pm-5:30 pm)
"Body is not her own: Patriarchy: Violence and prostitution in Post Nineties none mainstream Cinema: A Critical Feminist Approach Key Words: Body, Sexuality, Violence and Indian Cinema".
Dr Debjani Halder, independent film maker and social activist from Kolkata, India will present the keynote paper.

Discussants:

  • Bijaya Jena: Actor and Filmmaker, India
  • SamiaZaman, Filmmaker and media personality Bangladesh
  • Alin Tasciyan, Deputy General Secretary of the FPRESCI and Film Critic from Turkey will preside the session.

Day 2, Saturday, 12 January 2019
Day 2-Session 1: (9:30 am–11 am)
"Cinematic gaze and gender masquerading: some film examples".
Maja Bogojevic, film theorist/critic, founder and editor-in-chief of the first Montenegrin film magazine, Camera Lucida will present the keynote paper.

Discussants:

  • Marija Ratković Vidaković  is a film producer and filmmaker from Zagreb, Croatia
  • Makfire Miftari is an actor and producer from Kosovo
  • Zerifa Wahid is one of the most prominent artists from Assam, Indiawill preside the session.

Day 2-Session 2: (11:30 am-1 pm)
“Emergence of woman film makers and the role/importance of film institutions in this changing scenario”
Aparajita Ghosh, director and actress from India will present the keynote paper.

Discussants:

  • Bijaya Jena: Actress and Filmmaker, India
  • Charlotte RøhderTvedt: an award-winning documentary filmmaker from Norway
  • Prof. Dr Sadeka Halim,Dean Faculty of Social Science, University of Dhaka will preside the session.

Lunch break: 1 pm–2 pm

Day 2-Session 3: (2-4:30 pm)
“What are American Women Doing to Alleviate Gender Discrimination in Cinema?”
Sydney Levine, trainer/ educator, writer and consultant for festival, international sales and financing strategies from LA, USA will present the keynote paper.

Discussants:

  • Prof. Alexis Krasilovsky, Dept. of Cinema and TV Arts, California State University, USA.
  • Sadia Khalid, Deputy Editor, Show Time, Dhaka Tribune, Bangladesh
  • Alin Tasciyan, Deputy General Secretary of the FPRESCI and Film Critic from Turkey will preside the session.
